Who'll be Citizen of the Year

The four nominees for the 2010 Citizen of the Year were announced during the opening ceremonies on Canada Day at Fort George Park. The final nominees are Dr. Theresa Healy, Sharon Hurd, Ruth Langner and Shawn Rice.

A former teacher at Duchess Park senior secondary school has been charged with sexual abuse that happened about 25 years ago.

Carbon tax increase on Canada Day

The provincial government's carbon tax on gasoline is set to rise by 1.12 cents a litre tomorrow. The hike means motorists will be paying 4.45 cents per litre in carbon tax when at the pumps. The tax on light fuel oil will be increased by 1.

It's still on the drawing board but the proposed downtown district energy system has earned city hall the Canadian District Energy Association's municipal green award for 2010. Mayor Day Rogers said the city is honoured to receive the award.
