A man was sentenced Tuesday to a further 49 days in jail for setting a dumpster on fire and then returning to the scene of the crime.
Edward Joseph Brookfield, 36, was issued the term in Prince George provincial court on a count of mischief $5,000 or under from the March 14 incident next to a 1600-block Spruce Street business.
Prince George RCMP said at the time that police and firefighters were first called to the site shortly after midnight.
The blaze was quickly extinguished and but after they had left, a security monitoring company called police to say the suspect had come back.
RCMP said Brookfield was attempting to start another fire when police showed up. He tried to flee but was arrested a short distance away.
Brookfield was also sentenced to 30 days in jail for theft $5,000 or under for a February 27 incident and to time served for a Dec. 20, 2021 breaking and entering and for resisting arrest from the March 14 incident. He was also sentenced to one year probation on all of the counts.
Brookfield has remained in custody since he was arrested for the dumpster fire, a total of 42 days.
