Taking it outside: Prince George gymnasts earn four overall medals in first outdoor competition

Whistler Summer Classic brings elements into play with unique meet

When you think of gymnastics, you would probably think of a huge indoor gym where athletes to practice, train, and compete.

Well, that’s not the case at the Whistler Summer Classic, an event that puts athletes in the sun’s spotlight for B.C.’s only outdoor gymnastics competition on the calendar.

This past weekend (June 21-23), the Prince George Gymnastics Club got the chance to send athletes to Whistler for the first time in the meet’s five-year history and had a successful showing by earning four overall medals, including one silver and three bronze.

Aimee Fournier took that lone second-place finish after an impressive outing; her silver medal was premised on claiming first on the floor, second on the uneven bars, third on the vault, and eighth on the balance beam.

The Junior Olympic (J.O.) Four-level gymnast was also one of three to earn the best score for her category in a specific challenge.

Hannah Robinson, who took home one of Prince George’s three overall bronze medals, took the top prize on the uneven bars in J.O. Four, while Maija Coleman had the best vault in J.O. Six at the junior level.

The other two medallists were senior athletes Alencia Graham (J.O. Six) and Madison Boomhower (J.O. Seven), who also earned the Best Vault Award in her category.

On the interclub stage, Kerrianne Brown and Avery Lodge brought back a pair of individual awards to Prince George after receiving the Beautiful Balance Beam and Dazzling Dancer honours respectively.

This was the final meet of the 2019 season for the Prince George Gymnastics Club.
