Prince George’s Alia Wilson shines silver twice at Western Canadian Gymnastics meet

Individual performance leads to personal best score of 16-year-old’s young career

Team B.C. had a ‘well-balanced’ weekend in Saskatoon, thanks to a Prince George athlete.

Alia Wilson took the beam at the 2019 Western Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships for her province, taking home the silver medal for her individual effort in the Junior Olympic 10 category, the highest level of difficulty for gymnasts.

The 16-year-old had the lead after Day One of the two-day meet, easily advancing to the finals while also breaking her personal best score with a 9.525.

On Day Two, she continued to show off her solid skills by posting a 9.375 for the silver medal after completing her routine.

The Prince George Gymnastics Club member missed out on the top of the podium to B.C. teammate Micah Yabut by 0.025 points.

As a team, Wilson suited up for the province on the first day of competition, aiding her fellow gymnasts to an overall second-place finish.

She also left the prairies with the second best all-around score on Team B.C. with 36.025 points.

That was also good enough for eighth overall out of 24 athletes in her division, one-and-a-half points back of first place.

Wilson’s other individual results were 13th on the uneven bars, 17th from vault, and 20th on the floor.

She will be off to the National Championships in Ottawa next month, May 21-26 at Carleton University.

However, before she hops on a plane in a few weeks, Prince George Gymnastics is hosting its regional championship competition (Zone Eight), which takes place May 3-5 at its 18th Avenue facility next to the CN Centre.
