Gold rush; Prince George gymnasts top the podium in Quesnel meet

Six local athletes come out shining at Gold Pan Invitational

There’s gold in them thar hills!

Okay, maybe not in ‘thar hills,’ but the Prince George Gymnastics Club didn’t have to travel too far to mine for medals at a meet in Quesnel this past weekend (Feb. 22 - 24).

The Gold Pan Invitational saw local gymnasts tumble, vault, and jump their way onto the top of the podium six times in six different categories.

Kaylee Oberg swept her age group (vault, bars, balance beam, floor exercise) before family, friends, and teammates at Correlieu Secondary school.

The 15-year-old was the only member of Prince George Gymnastics to accomplish this feat, landing her the all-around gold medal.

Sophia Schwab, who also took the all-around gold in her age group, nearly completed the sweep, finishing first in every event except the floor exercise where she landed in third place.

Other all-around winners included Ella Petrovicky, Aimee Fournier, Airanna Vukovic, and Saige Lupul.

Fournier and Vukovic were also recognized by the tournament committee, winning individual awards for Best Vault and Best Bar Routine respectively in their age groups.

Though she did not compete in the Gold Pan Invitational, Kaitlyn Muir was honoured with the Amber Kotzer Award for Most Courageous Athlete.

The 15-year-old suffered an injury during the Zone Eight high school trials on Friday (Feb. 22), forcing her to drop out of the competition.

Prince George Gymnastics will now head west on Highway 16 for the Terrace Peaks Invitational on Saturday (March 2) and Sunday (March 3).
