PHOTOS: Residents take advantage of long-awaited summer weekend in Prince George

Sunday (July 26) was hottest day of 2020 thus far at more than 25 C

With COVID-19 continuing its havoc on the world, this past weekend brought bright smiles to Prince George residents who were hoping to get some sort of summer.

The city saw its highest-recorded temperature of the season thus far, peaking at 25.9 C on Sunday (July 26) according to Environment Canada’s report.

This was about six degrees shy of a regional record set in 1998, when the mercury reached 31.6 C.

This was also the first weekend of 2020 that Prince George went back-to-back in the 20s temperature-wise with a high of 21.1 C on Saturday (July 25).

As a result of the beautiful conditions, local residents decided to go outside and bask in the northern B.C. sunshine while maintaining social distancing from others.

Activities included long walks in the neighbourhood, a trip to the lake, fishing, biking, finishing DIY home projects and relaxing on the patio.

Environment Canada has more sun in the forecast for Prince George this final week of July, including highs between 25 and 30 C through until Friday (July 31).

The B.C. Day long weekend (Aug. 1-3), however, is calling for cloudy skies and chances of showers, but are subject to change depending on weather patterns.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has encouraged spending time outside to help with mental and emotional anxiety during the pandemic, but to also be wary of others’ health and safety.

Tips have included staying two metres between people, wearing a mask if you can’t be at a distance, washing your hands frequently and to stay home if you feel sick in any way, shape or form.
