When the new curbside recycling program rolls out locally in September, residents will have another tool to help keep everything straight.

Multi-Material B.C. announced they are partnering with ReCollect, a B.C.-based waste collection mobile application developer, to create a smartphone app.

MMBC is the organization responsible for carrying out the provincially mandated recycling of packaging and printed paper, slated to begin May 19.

Through the app, residents will be able to determine which materials can be recycled and how to do it, whether it's via depot or curbside pickup, based on their postal code. The company will also develop a search function on MMBC's website.

"We look forward to working with the team there [at ReCollect] to help ensure more packaging and printed paper is recycling and we keep our recycling out of landfills," said MMBC managing director Allen Langdon, in a press release.

The app will feature weekly collection calendars and reminders, as well as search tools on both Apple and Android devices.

Though the provincial stewardship program begins next month, according to MMBC the app will be rolled out in Prince George to coincide more closely with the start of curbside collection in September.

ReCollect's software is currently used in municipalities across B.C. and Canada.

Waste collection apps are not new to the area. Last year, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George launched their own smartphone application, My-Waste, to provide at-your-fingertips information about where and when to put out garbage or take recyclable materials.
