UPDATED: Environment Canada's air quality advisory still in effect for Prince George

Rain is in the forecast for the area

Environment Canada has continued the special air quality statement for Prince George issued Monday, Aug. 5 as wildfire smoke continues to impact visibility and air quality.

The advisory, updated Tuesday, Aug. 5, warns that smoke is either currently causing or is expected to cause poor air quality over the next 24 hours.

People are being advised to limit time outdoors, particularly those at higher risk of smoke-related illness, such as seniors, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Mild symptoms may include sore eyes, headaches or coughing, while more serious effects such as wheezing or chest pain may require medical attention.

Health officials are also recommending the use of well-fitting respirator masks, such as N95s, for those who must be outside, and suggest keeping windows closed and using air filtration systems indoors to reduce exposure.

Environment Canada says conditions can change quickly depending on wildfire activity and shifting winds. There was light rain early Tuesday morning.

As of 6:33 a.m., the temperature at Prince George Airport sat at 8.5 C, with a humidity level of 97 per cent and light winds coming from the east-northeast at five kilometres per hour. Visibility was 16 kilometres, and the barometric pressure is holding steady at 101.5 kPa.

Environment Canada is calling for a 40 per cent chance of showers throughout the day, with the high expected to reach 22 C. The same chance of precipitation continues overnight, with a low of 11 C.

Rain is expected to become more persistent mid-week, with a few showers forecast for Wednesday and heavier showers continuing into Thursday. Daytime highs are expected to remain steady in the low 20s.

The weather should improve by the end of the week, with sunshine returning on Friday and a mix of sun and cloud through the weekend.
