The Elks May Day parade has been canceled for this year.

Had it gone ahead as scheduled, it would have been the 88th year the event has been held, but a lack of interest means it's been put on hold until at least next year.

"In the last few years when we've had a parade, it's been hard to get any participation in it and there just seems to be not that much interest in the city," Elks past president Lawrence Meier said Wednesday.

With the city's 100th birthday coming up, Meier is hoping it will be revived in 2015.

"We're not necessarily canceling it forever," Meier said.

From as many as 25 floats in the past, the number has declined to about 10 in recent editions. A lack of marching bands has also become noticeable and the tradition of choosing a May Queen died off in the last few years.

"We used to get floats from all over the area," Meier said. "The City hasn't had a float for years either."

There is still an outside chance the parade could be put on this year, Meier said, but it would take a miracle.

"The only way it could come back is if some other organization wanted to do it or do it with us so we could reconsider it, but right now it is definitely canceled for this year," Meier said.
