Hunting with Holmes: Check out these treasures found at Prince George Hospice Resale Shop

Silver and Gold!
Hunting with Holmes - Oct. 23 silver and gold
Second-hand jewelry... real or fake? (via Amanda Holmes for Prince George Hospice Resale Shop)

One of the more popular donations we receive is jewelry.

More than 80 per cent of what we get are costume pieces, but about 15 per cent is more obviously higher end.

We usually collect a small amount of what we think is either silver or gold and we take it be appraised.

I’m like a crow, I LOVE shiny, pretty things. So off I go with beautiful bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings. So many sparkly pieces just waiting to be appraised.

Or not...?

So believe it or not, there is a huge market for fake jewelry out there (apparently I was a bit ignorant before I started this job).

Even the tell-tale 10K, 14K stamps don’t necessarily mean it’s real gold.

I’ve seen Tiffany earrings and Rolex watches be laughed at by professional jewellers because they can tell immediately that they’re not the real deal.

I’m slowly learning the little tips and tricks to tell real from fake but it’s not easy. Some of the fake stuff is nicer than the real thing!

Personally, I’ve never been a “brand” person. If I like something I wear it.

I don’t care that it cost $5,000... if it costs me $5 and I love it, I’m happy!

Finding a valuable piece of jewelry in a thrift store is very exciting however, and so many of our shoppers come daily just to see what’s new on the shelf.

It’s all part of the “treasure hunt.”

Make sure when you’re out second-hand shopping, thrift store scoping, or resale re-buying, always check out the jewelry section.

You just never know what pretty piece you may stumble upon.

Happy Hunting!
