Travel on city transit is free today, following the dust advisory issued Tuesday morning.
The city's Free Fare for Clean Air program will remain in effect until midnight the day the advisory is lifted.
"Light winds and dry conditions overnight as well as clear skies contributed to dust accumulating in the air shed," said a joint release from the provincial Ministry of Environment and Northern Health Authority.
Coarse particles were measured at levels above the desired provincial benchmark of 50 mirograms per cubic metre downtown and at the BCR site Tuesday.
While air quality advisories are in effect, the city's Clean Air Bylaw prohibits all open burning, including backyard burning and land clearing burning, while an air quality advisory is in effect. During these periods, recreational fires and street sweeping activities are prohibited, as is the use of wood-burning appliances, except for sole wood burning heat users.
