Stop spending ad dollars on American social media, Klassen and Skakun urge

Two Prince George city councillors will give notice that they want the city to return to buying advertising space from local media companies like The Citizen at their Monday, May 26 meeting.

On the agenda for the meeting is a notice of motion from councillors Brian Skakun and Trudy Klassen directing the city to reinstate advertising of public notices outlined in BC’s Community Charter up to an annual maximum of $100,000 in The Citizen.

The motion also calls on the city to reduce advertising on American online platforms like Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, by 50 per cent as well as public a transparency report on how the city spends its advertising dollars and hold a town hall on the subject in the first quarter of 2026.

This motion would be discussed by councillors at their June 9 regular meeting.

Under the Community Charter, local governments must issue public notice for items like hearings in a newspaper distributed at least weekly unless they have passed a bylaw stating otherwise.

In 2022, council passed a bylaw stating that the city must only give notice for these items on its website and Facebook page but has the option to advertise in a print or online newspaper if the other methods don’t prove to be practical.
