A woman was confirmed to have sustained injuries at a time when she was arrested and released by Burns Lake RCMP in December 2020.

Despite this taking place late last year, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) was alerted on Thursday (April 15) and are now trying to determine if police actions led to those injuries.

On Dec. 6 at around 12:15 p.m., Mounties from the northern B.C. village responded to reports of an impaired snowmobile operator.

Once it was found at a home on 4700-block Tchesinkut Road East, a man was arrested without incident and was taken to detachment cells.

A woman was inside the home while another officer in waiting for a tow truck to pick up the snowmobile.

According to information provided to the IIO, the woman reportedly tried to 'interfere with evidence' involving the snowmobile, the officer advised she was under arrest and an alleged interaction took place before she was taken to a cell.

She was later released and went to a local hospital where it was found she had sustained injuries.

An investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is being asked to contact the IIO toll-free at 1-855-446-8477.
