The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is planning a series of controlled burns near Williams Lake starting as soon as Saturday.

Sites to be treated to help restore native grassland ecosystems include:

- Beecher's Prairie (Highway 20 at the Toosey turnoff), 80 hectares;

- Bald Mountain (south of Riske Creek), 120 hectares;

- Deer Creek (Alexis Creek area), 100 hectares;

- Crow's Bar (Fraser River area south of Dog Creek), 1,750 hectares;

- Ward Creek (Fraser River area north of Gang Ranch), 400 hectares.

Burns will also be conducted to lower wildfire hazards in the Felker Lake and Chimney Lake recreation sites southwest of Williams Lake.

The burns are subject to weather conditions but officials intend to have them completed by mid-May.

Trained firefighting crews ignite, monitor and extinguish the burns to prevent them from getting out of control.
