Bear Lake residents will be headed to the polls this spring.

Bear Lake Community Commission member Sandra Child's resignation leaves a gap on the five-person board. Last week members of the Regional District of Fraser-George appointed a chief electoral officer to conduct a by-election to fill the job.

Under the B.C. Local Government Act, the by-election must be held no later than May 9.

The Bear Lake Community Commission is made up of four locally-elected members, plus the director of the regional district's Crooked River-Parsnip electoral area, who sits as an ex-officio commissioner.

The current members are regional district director Pat Crook and commissioners Sandra McClure, Charlie MacDougall and Herbert Franklin.

The commission is responsible for managing the operation of local fire protection, street lighting, cemetery operations, community water services, creation facilities and the ambulance station.

The commissioner elected by by-election will serve until the next local government general election on Oct. 15, 2022.
