Fire at Moccasin Flats destroys tent

Man loses personal belongings in fire Monday afternoon

A fire at one of the campsites at the Moccasin Flats encampment in downtown Prince George destroyed a tent structure and the belongings of one of the camp residents Monday afternoon.

Prince George Fire Rescue was called to the scene at about 12:20 p.m. Monday and arrived at the scene with the tent fully aflame and heavy black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire led to small explosions of an unknown origin in the campsite which could be heard throughout the neighbourhood.

The fire was extinguished quickly and damage was contained to the area of the camp before it spread to the nearby hillside that separates the site from the Millar Addition neighbourhood.

A poplar tree next to the site was scorched in the fire but the fire crews prevented it from being permanently damaged

There were no injuries.

The city is trying to secure an injunction to close down Moccasin Flats as a permanent campsite. That decision is before the courts, pending a BC Supreme Court judge’s ruling.
