It's dicey, but the trails at Otway Nordic Centre are open and there will be enough snow to stage this weekend's B.C. Cup Biathlon races.
Just barely.
The big late-winter meltdown has exposed brown lawns in the city and sunny skies and above-average temperatures are not what race organizers had hoped for, and with no sign of snow for the next two days they won't be getting any help from Mother Nature.
The saving grace is predicted overnight lows are expected to dip below the freezing point and if any bare spots do appear on the trails, there's still plenty of snow left around the trees for volunteer race officials to shovel on to the biathlon course.
After an overnight low of -4C, clear skies are expected today with a high of 11C. Cloudy skies are predicted for Sunday with a high of 11C, after an overnight low of 1C.
Today's mass start event is a 10km race for the seniors/juniors and a 3km race for midgets which features four shooting rounds. The sprint races on Sunday are to a maximum length of 7.5km, with two bouts of shooting.
