Spruce Kings swap defencemen in trade with Salmon Arm

The Kings acquired 2006-born defenceman Aidan Souligny from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in return for 2004-born defenceman Max Ranström and future considerations.

The trade dominoes are starting to fall in the Prince George Spruce Kings’ camp.

The Kings completed a trade Wednesday to acquire 2006-born defenceman Aidan Souligny from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in return for 2004-born defenceman Max Ranström and future considerations.

Souligny, a six-foot-one 198-pound native of Navan, Ont., a Boston University recruit, had two assists in 25 games with the Silverbacks.

“He’s already committed to a high-end school, Boston University, and we’re excited to have him,” said Kings general manager Mike Hawes.

“He's a player who thinks the game well and has good size and strength. He is a great addition to our back end.”

Known for his hard shot from the point, Souligny should be in the lineup for to face his former Silverback teammates for Friday’s game in Salmon Arm.

“I'm looking forward to joining the Spruce Kings and meeting all the players,” said Souligny, who turned 18 on Jan 2nd. “I've heard nothing but positive things about the team, coaching staff and the city of Prince George.”

Ranström was one of two non-North American players the Spruce Kings recruited this season. The five-foot-10, 195-pound native of Filipstad, Sweden played 32 games for the Kings and had six goals and 13 assists.

He’s committed to Lake Superior State University for 2025-26.

The BCHL trade deadline is this Saturday at 4 p.m.

In other BCHL news, Prince George minor hockey product Fischer O’Brien was selected as the league’s NAPA Auto Parts First Star of the week.

O’Brien led the Alberni Valley Bulldogs to back-to-back victories last week totaling two goals and four assists in those two games. His two assists tied the game in Duncan against the Cowichan Valley Capitals and he scored the game-winning goal in the third period for a 4-3 win Wednesday. Then on Saturday in Port Alberni the 18-year-old former Prince George Cougar forward had a goal and two assists in a 3-1 win over the visiting West Kelowna Warriors.

O’Brien ranks third in Bulldogs scoring with 36 points in 33 games, including 14 goals.
