PGSS girls golden on hard court

Mavia Nijjer led the Prince George secondary Polars girls to gold on the weekend at the Grande Prairie Senior Basketball championship.

The 17-year-old earned the MVP honour after putting up 31 points in the final as the Polars edged out the hometown school of Grande Prairie Composite 62-58. Issy Bourque added 12 points for the Polars.

In the semifinal the Polars easily defeated Edmonton's St. Joseph's Catholic 72-41 with Nijjer scoring 22 points and Olivia Letendre contributing 10.

Friday the Polars didn't break a sweat as they defeated Worsely 60-19 (Nijjer had 19 points, Jill Cole had 12) and then rolled over St. Thomas Moore Kodiaks 75-7. Emily Aase downed 17 points against the Kodiaks.

In the boys division the PGSS Polars finished fifth, beating Worsely 103-66 with AJ Bains scoring 24 points, falling to Barrhead Composite 88-76 and wrapping up with a 89-35 win over Peace River behind Nick Novak's 22-point night.

Both the senior girls and boys are back in action Wednesday against the College Heights Cougars as the Prince George Basketball League begins its season.
