Aidan Proctor is on quite the roll this season.
He's won every single motocross race he's entered in Williams Lake and Quesnel. Competing in Terrace on June 13 and 14, he won those motos as well on his 85cc bike, with the exception of one race when he crashed.
On Saturday, despite slick and muddy conditions on his home track at Blackwater Motocross Park, he won both the 85cc 12-16-year-old class and the super mini class races.
"The key has been getting out to a good start, that's huge," said the 14-year-old member of the Prince George Motocross Association prior to Sunday's slate of racing. "All I have to do is get out out front, stay calm and ride my own race. I've also had a lot of practice. Last year I put in 150 hours (on the track)."
Having only raced for four years, that attitude has helped him for the past two seasons, consistently placing in the top-five and continually increasing his speed.
He captured the overall B.C. Motocross Association points championship in 2014 in the 85cc 12-16-year-old division.
The class features riders racing the same size of 85cc bikes, while the super mini class features those ranging from the 85cc to 112cc size.
In addition to his success in Terrace, while also studying for his math final, he qualified for the Western Canadian Amateur Nationals in Raymond, Alta. from July 2 to 4.
"I'm not expecting to win, there are a lot of fast riders from Alberta who'll be there," said the D.P. Todd secondary student who just completed Grade 8. "I'm hoping for top-10. It's going to be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it."
Proctor's younger cousin Mason St. Pierre has also found success on the BCMA circuit.
In 2014, St. Pierre clinched the BCMA overall championship title in the four to six-year-old division.
Not bad for the six-year-old from Prince George in rookie season of racing on his 50cc bike.
Now seven, the Heather Park elementary student who just wrapped up Grade 2, is gearing up for a repeat performance, this time in the seven to eight-year-old 50cc class.
Going into the weekend's set of motos on his home track at Prince George's
Blackwater Motocross Park, St. Pierre sat third overall after three third-place finishes and one fourth-place finish.
"(My motto is) I'm in it to win it," said St. Pierre prior to Sunday's races. "The key is to keep your speed and I received lessons from a pro rider. There are usually six riders in our gate."
He's sponsored by Northland Dodge, Fountain Tire, Crazy Riding and SignTek.
Another PGMA racer, Bailey Garrison hopes to this year build on his performances from 2014 where he finished second overall in the BCMA standings in the 85cc 12 to 16-year-old class in only his third season of racing. He was fourth overall in the schoolboy 250cc division.
This season, he's moved up to the junior MX2 and MX3 classes where he rides his 250cc bike. The junior MX2 division is just for 250cc bikes with two-stroke engines while the junior MX3 division features 250cc and 450cc bikes with two and four-stroke engines.
It's been a steady uphill climb for the Duchess Park student who just completed Grade 10.
"In my first year I wasn't very good," he said. "In my second year I was fourth in the schoolboy division and fourth in the 85cc 12 to 16-year-old class. In my first few races of 2015 I've had two first-place finishes and a third place in Quesnel and in Terrace last weekend I had two first place finishes and a second-place finish."
His goal in 2015 is to win all three of his categories and and knows what he has to do to get there. He finished second in both of his motos Saturday at the Blackwater track, despite crashing in both of them.
"I just need to stay on two wheels, be patient and not push too hard," he said. "And make clean passes. I've got a trainer this year and have been riding every day, working on my starts and mastering the corners. In the first moto on Saturday, I crashed and was passed by three kids and got back up and caught up to them. In the second moto, I crashed at the top of a hill and still caught up."
