Kings out to knock Express off tracks

The Prince George Spruce Kings would like to right a few wrongs this weekend.

The Kings take their 2-0 record into Coquitlam tonight and Saturday to face the 0-2 Express in the second weekend of the B.C. Hockey League's regular season.

Prince George doesn't have to go too far back in the memory bank to remember what happened the last time the two teams met.

In March at the Coliseum, in Game 6 in the first round of the best-of-seven Mainland Division playoff series, the Kings threw everything they had at the Express but lost 2-1 in the second period of sudden-death overtime.

The Express, who finished the regular season 11 points behind the Kings, went on to win the BCHL championship.

The sudden-death playoff loss left a bad taste in the Kings' mouths, especially in the five 20-year-old graduating players, said third-year sniper Justin Rai, one of 11 returning players who remember it and are champing at the bit.

"In the division we play them eight times a year so we've built a rivalry with them in both the playoff series and the league," said Rai.

"They have a different look to them and we're excited to get a second crack at them."

The Kings are coming off a pair of wins against Nanaimo (6-4) and Alberni Valley (6-5) at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack on opening weekend.

The Express were derailed by the West Kelowna Warriors 6-2 Friday and were clobbered 8-3 by the Trail Smoke Eaters Saturday.

Kings head coach Dave Dupas isn't taking anything for granted on this three-game road trip that also takes them to Surrey Sunday for a matinee match-up (4 p.m.)

"Our schedules were different at the BCHL Showcase so we didn't have an opportunity to watch them," he said. "They have some really good players coming back. We know they're dangerous."

The Kings return to Prince George for their home-opener Oct. 3 against Chilliwack.
