The Prince George Spruce Kings have added some size and grit to their defensive corps. Jake McCarthy, a 1996-born six-foot-one 195-pound defenceman, has committed to spend the 2014-15 season with the B.C. Hockey League team.

The Prince George Spruce Kings have added some size and grit to their defensive corps.

Jake McCarthy, a 1996-born six-foot-one 195-pound defenceman, has committed to spend the 2014-15 season with the B.C. Hockey League team.

He spent last season with the Portland Jr. Pirates of the United States Premier Hockey League, and, prior to that, played three seasons at St. Sebastians School.

McCarthy has committed to the University of Massachusetts for 2015-16.

"Jake is a player I've been recruiting for the past several months," said Kings general manager Mike Hawes. "He's a big player who skates well and doesn't mind the physical side of the game. He has a good skill set and thinks the game well and will come in here and be able to play in all situations for us this season as he develops for his transition to NCAA Division 1 hockey."

McCarthy will join his new Spruce Kings teammates just prior to the start of training camp on Friday, Aug. 29.
