Cameron Lawson has secured a spot in the top ranks of U.S. college hockey for next season.
Lawson, a 19-year-old forward for the Prince George Spruce Kings, has landed a scholarship at the College of the Holy Cross, located in Worcester, Mass. He'll be a member of the Holy Cross Crusaders, who skate in Division 1 of the NCAA.
"This is a great opportunity for me," Lawson said. "They showed interest in me very early on this season. I feel I will be getting lots of ice time and the opportunity to study in a very good school."
Lawson, a first-year member of the Kings but a four-year veteran of the B.C. Hockey League, has 12 goals and 20 points in 30 games this season. Four of his goals have been game-winners.
"We are very happy for Cameron," said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. "He has been everything we hoped for when we acquired him last summer. He's a good, hard-working player, a tremendous young man, a great teammate and an excellent student who is very deserving of this scholarship."
Lawson came to the Kings from the Victoria Grizzlies as part of the transaction that sent the Fitzgerald triplets -- Myles, Leo and Gerry -- south.
Four members of the Kings have now earned scholarships for next season. The others are forwards Coltyn Hansen (Sacred Heart) and Jace Hennig (Merrimack), and defenceman Kevin Guiltinan (Harvard).
The Spruce Kings currently sit third in the BCHL's Mainland Division, with a record of 15-9-1-5. They'll put a three-game winning streak on the line this weekend when they play road games against the Grizzlies, Cowichan Valley Capitals and Surrey Eagles. The contests will close out the 2012 portion of the Kings' schedule.
