The Prince George Gnats Rugby Club and the newly formed Highlanders Rugby club are joining forces on Saturday, July 5 for a one-day skills camp.

The free camp, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. kicks off on the pitch at Duchess Park secondary and is for male and female athletes in Grades 8 - 12.

They'll work on all skills associated with rugby, including positional play, scrumming, rucks, line-outs, punting and tossing.

The Highlanders Rugby Club was created last month for players under-19 and younger due to teachers' job action which has cancelled organized school sport.

The club is guided by volunteer coaches Jeremy Cundy, Trevor Matters and Dean Rolufs who oversee the Duchess Park Condors rugby side.

About 22 male and female athletes from Duchess Park secondary were already part of the club, but when the invitation was extended to any Grade 8 to 12 student in Prince George, that number increased to 40 athletes from PGSS and College Heights.

The club has been fundraising to buy cleats, balls and jerseys.

For the camp, athletes are asked to bring a bag lunch, water bottle, mouth guard and cleats (if they have them). They can register the day of the camp, but they must have a parent signature on the waiver and registration form.
