A heat wave in Kamloops didn't prevent Prince George athletes from setting the pace at the B.C. Athletics Track and Field championships Jamboree on the weekend.
Carly Frenkel won a pair of medals to lead the six-member contingent from the Prince George Track and Field Club.
Frenkel, 18, leapt to a silver medal in the triple jump and tossed the discus to win bronze. She was also fifth in the long jump and sixth in the hammer throw.
Alex Nemethy, 17, and Kendel Rogers, 14, just missed picking up medals. Nemethy, who lives in Vanderhoof but trains with the PGTFC, finished fourth in the youth 2,000-metre steeplechase while Rogers was fourth in the midget girls pole vault.
Nemethy placed 17th in the 800m run while Rogers was sixth in triple jump and 11th in high jump.
Zach Matyas, 19, finished sixth in the 1,500m and 11th in the 800m. His impressive time of one minute 58.71 seconds was just three seconds behind the winner in what turned out to be a tight race to the finish.
In other results, Cole Dinsdale of Quesnel - who also trains with the PGTFC - was fifth in the 2,000m steeplechase, 14th in the 1,500m and 18th in the 800m.
Lindsay King, 14, finished seventh in the midget girls 200m hurdles, ninth in the 300m dash and 15th in the 80m hurdles.
Former PGTFC athlete Shelby Jansen of Prince George won gold in the midget girls 300m, clocking a time of 41.95 seconds, which was a half-second better than the second-place finisher. She was also fourth in the 200m dash.
A number of P.G. Track and Field Club members will join the rest of the Zone 8 team that's competing at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo this weekend.
