With February snow sticking to the ground, field lacrosse isn't exactly top of mind in Prince George right now. But, for several young local players, the game is front and centre.
Last weekend, a collection of Under-15 girls and Under-19 boys were in Langley for provincial field lacrosse championship tournaments. In girls competition, P.G. residents Kaitlyn Legeard, Serafina Sia, Shelby Watson and Emily Prouse were part of a New Westminster club that claimed bronze. On the boys side of the event, a short-staffed Prince George team fought to a 1-2 record, the win an 11-6 decision against North Shore.
"The boys had only three spares but played very well and at times dominated," said coach Bill Barwise.
Four members of the squad -- Pierce Watson, Dalan Etter, Tanner Thomsen and Colton Poulin -- will be moving to the Lower Mainland at spring break to join intermediate 'A' squads. Miguel Dasilva, meanwhile, will suit up for Team B.C. at the upcoming national championships and has earned a scholarship to Florida Southern College for next school year.
"It was nice to see the group come together and represent Prince George one last time before they head to their respective teams," Barwise said.
This weekend, a Prince George Under-14 boys team will be in Burnaby for a provincial championship tournament. Competing at provincials will be a first-time experience for the club.
Locally, youth field lacrosse is booming in popularity, with 68 players now in uniform.
