Assuming he can get a flight with Air Canada flight attendants on strike, Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels is coming back to Canada this week from the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with some hardware.
The 17-year-old from Cypress River, Man., helped Canada to a 3-0 win over Finland in the bronze medal game Saturday, Aug. 17 in Brno, Czechia.
Carels, who had an assist in Canada’s 4-3 shootout loss to the United States in a semifinal Thursday, finished the tournament with two assists in five games.
The U.S. went on to defeat Sweden 5-3 for gold Saturday in Trencin, Slovakia.
Carels was one of the top rookies in the Western Hockey League last season. In 60 games he scored six goals and had 29 assists for 35 points. In seven playoff games he had a goal and three assists.
The Cougars' training camp starts Wednesday, Aug. 27 and runs through Aug. 31.
