Burns Lake biathlete Emily Dickson pursuing world championship glory

Dickson and Nadia Moser of Whitehorse fast enough in Friday's sprint to qualify for pursuit on Sunday

A chest cold, a lung infection and COVID – Emily Dickson has had a tough go of it over the past month but she’s finally healthy again, just in time for the International Biathlon Union World Championships.

The 26-year-old Burns Lake native raced Friday in the women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint in Nove Mesto, Czechia and finished the 93-skier race in 57th place – good enough to qualify for Sunday’s pursuit.

Dickson was perfect in two shooting rounds and completed the course in 23:03.6, 2:56.1 behind gold medalist Julia Simon of France, whose teammates Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and Lou Jeanmonnot were second and third respectively to complete a podium sweep for France.

Dickson’s Canadian teammate, Nadia Moser of Whitehorse, finished 53rd with one miss in each shooting bout. Moser clocked 22:58.5 behind Simon and will leave the pursuit start gate 2:51 after French pacesetter takes off.

Benita Peiffer of Whistler (67th) and Emma Lunder of Vernon (69th) missed the top-60 cut for the pursuit.

Four Canadians are entered in the men’s 10 km sprint on Saturday, including Calgarians Adam Runnalls Christian Gow, and Haldan Borglum and Logan Pletz of Regina.
