Doing taxes is a particularly specific act for artists. Part business, part passion, the lines around taxation compliance are sometimes blurry.

The Community Arts Council (CAC) is hosting a workshop tonight for the self-employed artist. Whether you sell a few paintings or have your own gallery, whether you perform music or poetry for a coffeehouse or a coliseum, if you publish your own chapbooks or trilogies of novels, this workshop may be of interest to you as the fiscal year comes to a close.

"This workshop guides artists through what can be one of the most trying components of being self-employed or running a small business - planning for and preparing an annual tax return," said CAC executive director Sean Farrell. "This workshop teaches participants how to document their finances throughout the year in preparation for tax season, as well as reviewing the Canadian Revenue Agency guidelines for self-employed individuals."

The facilitator is local business development and taxation consultant Matt Hutcheon. This session is free for all local artists. It happens at 6 p.m. tonight at Studio 2880 (2880 15th Ave.)
