VIDEO: One year ago, Prince George Spruce Kings made history with first Doyle Cup

Team rallied against Brooks Bandits to claim regional championship on home ice

The force was strong with this group!

On this date last year, May 4, 2019, Prince George sports history was made as the Spruce Kings claimed its first-ever Doyle Cup in a 4-2 series-clinching victory before a full Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

The red, white and blue also won the series 4-2 over the Brooks Bandits, winning three straight on home ice to reach that feat, extending its unbeaten streak at the RMCA to 20.

Chong Min Lee scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in regulation, the second of a three-goal third-period rally that led to the championship.

Graduating players Lucas Vanroboys, Ben Brar and Patrick Cozzi scored the other three goals in the Game Six contest.

Goaltender Logan Neaton, an eventual 2019 NHL Draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets, stopped 22 of 24 shots from the Bandits.

The Doyle Cup was the second trophy the 2018-19 Kings’ added to their case last year after prevailing in the BCHL playoffs of their first provincial title in team history.

Prince George also became the first community-owned franchise to hoist the Fred Page Cup.

The Spruce Kings would face Brooks once more in the National Junior ‘A’ Championship final, but lost by a score of 4-3 to end its glory run.
