The UNBC women's basketball team will be looking to keep their Cinderella run going when they head to Alberta this weekend.

After their upset of the Trinity Western Spartans this past weekend (Feb. 8) in Langley, the Timberwolves will head to Calgary to take on the second-seeded Calgary Dinos.

There are three scheduled games for the quarterfinals, with game three being played if necessary:

  • Friday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. (PST)
  • Saturday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. (PST)
  • Sunday, Feb. 17 at Noon (PST) *if necessary*

UNBC finished ninth in Canada West standings and hit the road for a clash with TWU; the Spartans were the eighth seed in the conference with an 11-9 regular season record.

It was a thriller for the Timberwolves as they were down eight points with only minutes left and stormed back to win, with Vasiliki Louka grabbing the rebound at the buzzer after Trinity Western had an open look, but the shot rimmed out.

“That is a very, very good team,” UNBC coach Sergey Shchepotkin said after the game in a news release of TWU. “They shot the ball really well in the second half. It felt like they didn’t miss. All five players on the court can shoot for them, but we did what we could. We didn’t give up, and it was big.”

With the win, the ladies made history with the first Canada West women's basketball playoff win in program history for the Timberwolves.

“This feels awesome. It took six years to get this far,” Shchepotkin added in the release. “I am very happy it has happened with this group. I totally believe in all of them, and tonight, I felt like they all believed. I am proud of them.”

If UNBC defeats the Dinos this weekend, they would move on to the semifinals on Feb. 22, 23, and 24.
