When current UNBC president George Iwama steps down at the end of the year, a current vice president will step up to take his place.
The school's Board of Governors appointed Mark Dale as interim president of UNBC, effective Jan. 1, 2014. Dale has been the vice president academic and provost since 2008.
He will serve in the role until a replacement for Iwama is found. Political science professor John Young, who has been with UNBC since 1994, will fill Dale's current role during that interim.
Iwama, who announced in September he would not renew his contract as the head of the school, is leaving the community.
He was appointed executive vice president of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University in Japan.
The fledging school has this year admitted only its second cohort of students, all of whom are pursuing doctoral degrees in science. Iwama was born on Okinawa and lived there until he was 17 years old.
