UNBC basketball teams stumble against UFV Cascades

Women's undefeated season comes to an end in Abbotsford, while men also struggle

The UNBC women's basketball team couldn't get over the mountain that was the UFV Cascades this past weekend (Nov. 23 and Nov. 24), as their undefeated start to the season came to an end. 

The Cascades were 11th in the Canada West standings coming into the weekend before UFV defeated the Timberwolves twice, 72-66 on Nov. 23 and a tough three-point win (74-71) on Nov. 24. 

Vasiliki Louka led UNBC with 23 points, 11 rebounds and one assist on Friday. Taylor Claggett also had a monster game for the Cascades scoring 28 while adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the win. The Cascades shot 38.2 per cent from the field. 

On Saturday, the game was closer than the previous evening. 

Madison Landry scored 19 for UNBC while adding two assists and one steal in 35 minutes of action while Maria Mongomo put home 17 points and Louka chipping in with 16 in the loss. 

Once again, Claggett led the way for UFV scoring a game-high 25 points while adding 11 rebounds, three assists, five steals and one block.

With the back-to-back losses, UNBC now sits fourth in Canada West at 6-2 behind Trinity Western, Calgary and Saskatchewan. 

The men's team also dropped a pair of games in Abbotsford losing 81-62 on Friday (Nov. 23) and 85 to 79 on Saturday (Nov. 24). 

Jovan Leamy led the Timberwolves on Friday scoring 23 points on 9 of 22 shooting. 

Overall, the Timberwolves shot 40.3 per cent from the field on the night and 26.9 per cent from downtown. 

UFV had five players in double figures on the evening with Sukhjot Bains leading the way for the Cascades with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. 

Similar to the women, the Saturday game was closer and once again, Leamy led the Timberwolves with 23 points, two steals, eight rebounds while adding one assist in 37 minutes of action.

Parim Bains led the way for the Cascades with 19 points, five assists in 29 minutes of action.

With the losses, UNBC drops to 5-3 and sits seventh in Canada West with 10 points. 

Both the men and women now head to Saskatchewan for their last series before the holiday break with the women playing Nov. 29 and 30 at 4 p.m. The men tip off on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.
