Two long-distance cycling fundraisers will be coming through Prince George this summer.

The first to arrive will be University of Minnesota professor Peter Hilger, who is riding across Canada to raise money for three charities: Can Do Canines, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) USA and a University of Minnesota endowed scholarship.

The 66-year-old left Seattle on May 22 and rode north along Vancouver Island, before taking the ferry to Prince Rupert. Hilger is expected to arrive in Prince George on June 14. He expects to arrive in St. John’s, Newf. by mid-September.

“I want to see if people are inspired to push me along with donations. The theme of the trip is education, whether it’s educating an orphan, a college student, or a dog,” Hilger said in an email.

Hilger is funding the trip himself, and all donations made on his website will benefit the three charities.

On Sunday, one of two teams of riders taking part in the Texas 4000 – a long-distance cycling fundraiser to support cancer research – left Lampasas, Texas enroute for Anchorage, Alaska.

The 24-person team are riding the Sierra route north, and are expected to pass through Prince George between July 17 and July 24. Organizers did not respond to a request for additional details.

A second team departed Houston, Texas on the same day, but won’t pass through Prince George.
