BC SPCA has closed its shelters to the public.
They will remain open for emergency surrenders and adoptions by appointment, the agency said Wednesday, but beyond that their doors are closed.
"In order to protect our staff, volunteers and members of the public during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become necessary for us to put these restrictions into effect," said BC SPCA CEO Craig Daniell.
"However, staff and volunteers will continue to be on site caring for the animals, and to provide emergency treatment and on-going care for animals who come into our custody through cruelty investigations."
Those interest in adopting can still view available animals online and can follow the new online application procedures. To do so, go to spca.bc.ca/adopt.
Those who want to surrender an animal are asked to hold off for the time being. However, if you are in an emergency situation and cannot keep an animal, even temporarily, contact your local shelter.
Volunteers are being asked to foster animals but the SPCA will reach out to the public if more help is needed.
