The New York Mets have sent Prince George native Jared Young back to their triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, N.Y.
Young was called up to the major league team for his second stint this season with New York on July 11 and played one game before the all-star break.
On July 13 in Kansas City he was brought in to pinch-hit in the ninth inning and he delivered a sacrifice fly that brought in the tying run in game the Mets eventually lost 3-2.
The Mets returned outfielder Starling Marte from the 10-day injured list and Young was sent down following Monday’s game at Citi Field against the Los Angeles Angels to free up a spot on the major league roster.
On the plus side for the 30-year-old Young, his return to Syracuse means he will be back in a fielding position. The versatile left-handed hitter can play virtually any infield or outfield position but has played most of his pro career at either first or third base or at left field.
Used primarily as a designated hitter for New York, in 41 at-bats, Young had seven hits and three home runs for a .171 batting average and .637 OPS.
Through 32 games with Syracuse he’s hitting .272 with 10 home runs and 26 runs batted in with a .914 OPS.
Young’s MLB highlights this season are posted in a video clip on the Major League Baseball website.
