A 24-year-old Dawson Creek man was taken to hospital with a serious back injury after he rode off a 60-foot drop while snowmobiling near Powder King Ski Resort on Sunday.

The man suffered a compression fracture of the vertebrae, North District RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith said, but is expected to make a full recovery.

He didn't realize how far the fall would be until it was too late, Smith said.

"He then landed on a snow covered rock and was thrown from his snowmobile. The impact of the landing caused serious injury to his back," Smith said.

A GPS beacon activation was issued by the group he was with at about 1:45 p.m. from the scene about seven kilometres north of Powder King, located at the highest point in the Pine Pass.

Mackenzie RCMP members found the group's vehicles parked near Azouzetta Lake and a search and rescue team and a chartered helicopter were deployed with the chopper landing at the scene at about 6 p.m., then transporting the man to Mackenzie hospital.
