UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch short-lived for Prince George

Environment Canada has lifted its severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George this afternoon (Aug. 18).

This comes two hours after initially forecasting the chance of a thunderstorm today, set to potentially bring large hail and strong winds.

As of this update, the national service says showers are still expected tonight at a 60 per cent chance and winds up to 50 km/h.

There could possibly be some bright flashes in the skies today. 

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George. 

The weather agency says severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: 

  • Large hail
  • Damaging winds
  • Torrential rainfall 

In the forecast, winds are expected to gust up to 70 km/h later today amongst a 60 per cent chance of showers.

At night, Environment Canada says the city could see same conditions before clearing up overnight.
