Quesnel city council is now looking at a 2.7-per-cent increase in the community's tax levy. An 11-per-cent hike, adding up to $1 million, had been in the works, but on Monday staff came back with a proposal to hold the jump at $325,000 over the $11.

Quesnel city council is now looking at a 2.7-per-cent increase in the community's tax levy.

An 11-per-cent hike, adding up to $1 million, had been in the works, but on Monday staff came back with a proposal to hold the jump at $325,000 over the $11.9 million collected in 2009.

The reduction was realized in part by reducing staff hours by 5.15 full-time equivalent positions.

Among the reductiions, retired public works supervisor won't be replaced, a finance clerk position, two season public works employees plus a backup for public works administration will be eliminated.

As well $200,000 of capital work will be cut, meaning less asphalt patching, less flowers, less travel, less training, less community support and no grants in aid.

The next budget meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m.
