Police in Prince George are reminding the public to be on alert for ongoing fraud attempts involving fake phone calls, emails and text messages — all with one goal: to steal your money.
“We’ve all seen them,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, media relations officer with the Prince George RCMP. “The message we want people to hear is just don’t. Don’t engage with an unverified caller, don’t follow the link in an email, don’t respond to the text message. Always contact the company directly to verify any information.”
The RCMP detachment is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves, including:
- Don’t be swayed by messages that use emotional tactics
- Verify the legitimacy of any organization before responding
- Confirm charities through the Canada Revenue Agency
- If contacted by your credit card company, call the number on the back of your card
- Never give out personal information
- Install and update antivirus software
- Be cautious when sharing images online
- Use strong passwords to secure your online accounts
Police say if you fall victim to a scam, stay calm and take immediate action:
- Collect all relevant information, including receipts and any communications
- Notify your financial institution and report the fraud
- Put flags on your accounts and change all passwords
- Report the incident to both Equifax and TransUnion
- File a report with your local police and get a file number
- Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online
