Public works director Bill Gaal has hung up his city hall hat.

Gaal's retirement from his senior management position with Prince George was effective Friday, according to city spokesperson Mike Kellett.

Prior to becoming head of the department in 2008, Gaal managed transportation as well as parks and solid works portfolios.

Last year, succession plans were put into place at the city, with Gina Layte Liston moving into an associate director role for the public works department.

But Kellett said Layte Liston will remain in her associate position and that "there are no plans to hire a new associate director."

Filling Gaal's role on an interim basis is the city's chief engineer, Dave Dyer.
