This is not a fire ... it's just a smoky sunrise over Prince George

A colourful display lit up the eastern horizon Thursday morning

What looked like a huge plume of smoke from large fire on the eastern edge of the city early Thursday, Aug. 14 was nothing to worry about.

Emissions from the Canfor site and its neighbours was briefly lit up by the rising sun, creating a colourful show to start the day.

That sunshine, though, will be scarce in the days ahead.

Environment Canada is calling for a stretch of unsettled weather is expected to settle over the region beginning Friday, with rain and cooler-than-average temperatures in the forecast heading into next week.

Cloudy skies Thursday night will give way to showers Friday afternoon, as winds pick up from the southeast at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 near noon. The high will reach 19 C, with a moderate UV index of 4. Showers will continue overnight, with a low of 11.

Saturday will bring a mix of sun and cloud and a 40 per cent chance of showers, with a daytime high of 18. Periods of rain are forecast for Saturday night, with temperatures dipping to 8.

More steady rain is expected on Sunday, with a high of 18 and clearing skies overnight as the low drops to 6.

Conditions will improve Monday with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 18, though showers could return Monday night with a 60 per cent chance of rain and a low of 8.

Cloudy skies and a 60 per cent chance of showers persist Tuesday, with a high of 20, and similar conditions continuing into the night.

Wednesday’s forecast includes mostly cloudy skies and a 30 per cent chance of showers, with a high of 19.

Seasonal norms for this time of year are highs of 22 C and lows of 8.
