'Prolific' thief sentenced to 37 days

A man described by police as a “prolific thief” was sentenced to 37 days in jail for attempting to steal a backpack and several electronic devices from a vehicle on Dec. 14.

A man described by police as a “prolific thief” was sentenced to 37 days in jail for attempting to steal a backpack and several electronic devices from a vehicle on Dec. 14.

Kurt Werner Steinhauser, a  35-year old man, was also given 12 months probation and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of $100 on Tuesday. At the time of his arrest, he was well known to police, and had conditions related to a previous charges related to theft and possession of a weapon.

Police arrested Steinhauser at about 6 p.m. after observing him stealing items from a vehicle parked on Fourth Avenue near Ontario Street. Steinhauser attempted to flee the area on a bicycle.

Steinhauser was also ordered to pay an additional $300 in victim surcharges in relation to a previous charge of theft under $5000 and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes. He was initially arrested for these offences in September.

Police have urged the public to avoid leaving items of value in their vehicles over the holiday season.
