Environment Canada may have ended its winter storm watch in Prince George, but they have bumped up the alert instead.

The national agency has now placed a winter storm warning for the city and its surrounding areas, predicting a range of 30 to 50 cm of snow to fall between Thursday and the weekend.

This also includes Highway 97 toward the Pine Pass and Peace region, Highway 16 (Yellowhead) toward the Alberta border, and the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District.

Drivers are asked to be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.

Snow is already on the ground in Prince George, but more is on the way according to Environment Canada.

The agency has placed the city on a winter storm watch as of 4 a.m. today as a slow-moving frontal system is expected to spread the snow across all of B.C.'s north central interior.

A total of 15 to 30 cm of snow will fly Thursday morning and well into Friday and could stick around until the weekend when the system reaches the Alberta border.

Environment Canada meteorologists are monitoring the situation as the watch could be upgraded to a warning 'as the forecast becomes more certain.'

Commuters are being asked by regional transportation authorities to drive carefully if you're heading out along Highways 97, 16, 27, and 39.

Winter storm watches are also in effect for the Pine Pass, Highway 16 at the Alberta border, and throughout the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District.

Visibility could be low in certain areas, which could cause traffic delays.
