Prince George cyclists wheel in more than $32K for kids’ cancer research

Dozens of local riders pedalled in and around the city for month-long fundraiser

To summarize the month of August for Prince George cyclists, it was ‘great.’

About 120 riders took part in the 2020 Great Cycle Challenge last month, a nation-wide fundraiser for the SickKids Foundation and kids’ cancer research, and pooled together a local total of $32,525.

Altogether, 11,119,237 km of trails and roads in and around the city were covered during the campaign as participants each raised money for the cause and established individual distance goals with no set minimum.

Across Canada, more than 52,000 riders of all ages, skills and abilities raised $9,234,189 in 31 days.

Dorrie Sharcott brought in the most donations at $5,703.38 for Prince George’s chapter.

Rounding out the top three local fundraisers were Marvin Friesen ($3,227.13) and Harold Himmelspach ($2,700).

Participants also mounted several different types of bikes for the fifth annual event, including standard two-wheelers, recumbents and even unicycles.

According to SickKids, about 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer in Canada each year.

Since its 2016 inception, the Great Cycle Challenge has raised more than $12.4 million for kids’ cancer research.
