A summer series with a specific focus on engaging on human rights will make its way through northern B.C. this week.
The provincial Human Rights Commissioner's office is hosting a virtual town hall for Prince George and northeast B.C. residents on Thursday (Aug. 20), providing an opportunity to voice human rights issues impacting their lives, such as discrimination.
Kasari Govender will head the two-hour education and engagement session, which will give them a chance to share information about rights and responsibilities under B.C. law.
"People in our northern communities face unique human rights challenges," says Commissioner Govender in a statement.
"It’s important to me to connect directly with people from this region about the issues they are facing.
"As BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner is newly re-established, my office has identified five key priorities for our work and I want to hear whether these priorities resonate with what British Columbians living in the northeast are experiencing in their everyday lives."
Commissioner Govender adds they look forward to sharing information about supports those affected by human rights issues to seek out when they feel discriminated.
The meeting is scheduled online from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., when participants will be able to interact and ask questions.
Interested residents can register on the BC Human Rights Commissioner's website and a Zoom link will be sent to you prior to the start of the session.
A copy of the town hall will be posted to social media afterwards.
