Better motorcycle safety measures for riders being recommended for B.C. involve helmets, licences program and alcohol tolerance.
Since a total of 286 motorcycle deaths were reported between 2000 and 2007, B.C. Solicitor General Kash Heed says improvements to safety regulations are necessary and findings submitted by a Coroners Service review panel "will further support our ongoing work to protect motorcycle riders by reducing risks."
The recommendations, brought forward by the Coroners Service death review panel, are now being considered by province. They include:
** Requiring mandatory industry certification for all motorcycle helmets.
**Establishing a graduated licence program for new riders.
**Implementing zero tolerance blood-alcohol policy for new riders.
** Issuing a different-coloured licence plate to motorcyclists who hold a learners licence.
**Reevaluating existing standards for training schools and instructor certification.
**Expanding the scope of coroner's investigations involving motorcycle deaths to include more data for better analyses. Read what a local RCMP officer has to say in The Citizen.
