Kelowna wins blood donation competition

Kelowna has reclaimed the Interior Drive for Life title from Prince George.

But on the bright side, more than 300 new donors were signed up between the two communities during the eight-week campaign, put on each year by Canadian Blood Services.

Kelowna collected 1,698 blood donations in this year's campaign, which was 91.5 per cent of its 1,856 donation target. More impressive, it drew 200 new donors, 48 more than its target.

"We blew our new donor target out of the water by more than 30 per cent and couldn't be happier," said Gayle Voyer, partnership specialist with Canadian Blood Services.

"We maintained a slight lead in blood collections for several weeks against Prince George. Being underdogs helped us stay focused on hospital patients, our civic pride and the need to work a little harder this year to make sure our lead lasted."

For its part, Prince George collected 1,085 donations or around 89 per cent of its 1,216 donation target. The territory acquired 104 new donors, or 97 per cent of its goal of 107 new donors.

Donations will continue to be welcome year round.
