The fundraising campaign for a new type of CT scanner at UHNBC is off the ground, thanks to a $200,000 contribution from the Auxiliary to UHNBC Society.
The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation is looking to raise $1.4 million to cover the cost of a diagnostic Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT) scanner, which will allow for three-dimensional images and help with early diagnosis of diseases. It also combines both nuclear and radiology images into one document.
"This leading technology will take the radiology department at UHNBC from being very good to being world class," radiologist Dr. Raj Attariwala said. "With it we will be able to find the 'needle in the haystack."
The new SPECT machine will give physicians a chance to analyze how a particular organ within a body is functioning, for instance which areas of the brain are active and which parts are inactive. It can then be combined with the CT scan capability of the unit to provide a layered look at both the functionality of the body and its anatomy, giving physicians a more detailed picture with which to make a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Among the ailments it will help detect earlier are heart conditions, cancer, brain or spine injuries and bone or joint issues. It's also a valuable tool for pediatric diagnosis.
In addition, the scan can be done in a shorter period of time compared to other technologies and uses less radiation.
According to Northern Health, acquiring a SPECT CT unit is a top priority as part of a multi-year plan to upgrade its medical imaging technology.
"We are so pleased to see the hospital auxiliary take the lead with such a significant contribution to this fundraising initiative," foundation CEO Judy Neiser said in a news release. "As a valued donor, on a daily basis, they are able to see both the need and the benefit of their contributions to UHNBC. Their support is greatly appreciated."
Others groups and events have already started raising funds for the new scanner, including the Costco Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser, the Prince George Firefighters Harley Davidson Raffle, the Prince George Cougars Alumni Hospital Charity Golf Tournament, the Commonwealth Cup and the upcoming Boogie with the Stars set for Dec. 31.
