The Nechako Branch of the Prince George Public Library has been closed for the past two weeks.

A June 12 fire in the building next door caused smoke damage and other impacts. Library personnel called the damage "minor" but still the facility required repairs that took a lengthy duration to complete.

"We recognize that library patrons in the Hart are passionate about the Nechako branch, and we thank them for their patience during the closure. We closed the branch as a precautionary measure and are pleased that air quality tests confirm that the branch is safe for the public," said Jody Tindill, the organization's controller of facilities and finance.

"Due to smoke damage, all of the ceiling tiles at the branch were replaced. Contractors used Hydroxyl-based equipment as part of the smoke treatment. Ducts, carpets and all surfaces were cleaned last week."

Official testing was done to determine the safety of the Nechako branch's air quality.

At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the results came back positive. The facility was indeed safe for staff and patrons.

There are 25,500 items housed at Nechako Branch, including books, audiobooks, DVDs and other materials.

Any Nechako branch patrons who have questions about their accounts can call 250-563-9251 or email [email protected].

The branch will reopen at 10 a.m. today.
